An umbilical hernia is when abdominal content pokes out through the belly button and stretches the skin of the umbilicus. Most “outys” are in fact umbilical hernias. The vast majority of umbilical hernias, even quite large ones, will repair themselves in the first year of life and it is very uncommon for surgery to be required before the age of 2. If an umbilical hernia has not repaired itself by the age of 3 or 4 it is extremely unlikely to do so and surgical correction is recommended.
Post-operative care
We recommend no baths or showers for 2 days after the operation and then return to normal baths and showers. There is a clear, waterproof dressing over the incision which is inside the umbilicus. This will fall off of its own accord and does not need to be replaced. The stitches are dissolving stiches. They are under the skin and do not need to be removed. Return to all normal activities e.g swimming and sports after 10 days.
