A dermoid cyst is a rounded swelling that can occur anywhere in the midline of the body or at various places on the scalp. In utero, the skin starts on the outside and joins up in the middle. In some situations a small bit of outer skin is trapped on the inside at this fusion line. There is nowhere for the shed cells to go and so it builds up as a benign cyst. Surgical excision is recommended and is curative.
Post-operative care
We recommend no baths or showers for 2 days after the operation and then return to normal baths and showers. The wound is either covered with tissue glue or a clear, waterproof dressing. This will fall off of its own accord and does not need to be replaced. The stitches are dissolving stiches. They are under the skin and do not need to be removed. Return to all normal activities e.g swimming and sports after 10 days.
